If you'll be having a pumpkin on your doorstep this October 31st, you might be surprised to learn that your home milk delivery that lands alongside it can also help you to celebrate Halloween in a traditional way.
Lit carved pumpkins are probably the UK's most popular Halloween tradition, along with trick-or-treating, but they are not the only ways in which the event is celebrated in some cultures.
For instance, in France, there is a tradition of delivering milk to the departed, and this is done by pouring it into the hollows on tombstones.
If that's a little grim for an October evening, then a more light-hearted option is to use milk as invisible ink and write hidden messages on blank paper.
Back in the early 20th century, these messages would then be hidden inside walnut shells, which would be gently heated.
As it heats, the milk 'ink' turns brown, revealing the fortune on the surface of the paper.
If all else fails, draw the curtains, serve up pumpkin cookies with a mug of warm milk, and tell ghost stories to creep each other out.
